Work Factory Guidelines
Place a little newspaper and a handful of coir mixed with the vermiculite into the collector tray so that any worms wandering down there will have some food, shelter, and a way back up to the next level.
Place 4 sheets of newspaper or the square piece of cardboard included with the bin over the holes in the 1st working tray before adding the coir and worms. This will help to prevent worms and castings from dropping into the collector tray during start up.
Allow the compost to build up about 1 & 1/2 inches past where the next tray will rest. The reason for this is because the worms reduce the volume of waste by about 2/3rds. If you place the next tray on too soon then as the worms continue working the waste in the first tray the top of that bedding will eventually be reduced, thus causing a gap to develop between the trays and eliminating the worms ability to migrate between levels.
To start the next tray scrape about a half inch of bedding from the original tray that needs to build up 1 & 1/2 inches past the line where the next tray will rest and place that 1/2 inch into the next tray. This insures that worms, microorganisms, and habitat in which all are comfortable are in the next tray. Feed in thin layers, no thicker than ½ inch, top with about 4 inches of shredded moist newspaper and place cover over all.
To ensure proper moisture levels are maintained, mist the bedding periodically when you observe the bedding drying out a little or the newspaper drying on top.
