Down to Earth Ideas for a Better Environment SMHome > Invertebrates > Slug and Snail
Slugs and snails find their way into vermicomposting systems and should be removed by hand. Their eggs can hatch inside the bin and then you find more of them. Snails and slugs harm plants so it is best that as soon as you see any in your bin to remove them.
SLUG TRAP
Cut several 1-inch-square openings in the sides, near the top, of a clean covered cottage cheese, margarine, or similar container. Sink the container into the soil or bedding of worm bin so the openings are just above the soil surface. Remove the lid and pour in 1/2-inch of beer or yeast mixture described below. Replace the lid. Slugs will be attracted to the trap, fall in, (get drunk-ha ha) and drown. Empty the container every few days and refill.
Yeast mixture: Mix 2 tablespoons flour, 1/2 teaspoon baker's yeast and 1 teaspoon sugar in 2 cups warm water.
Controls
Slug and Snail Copper Barrier Tape
Copper holds a small electrical charge which repels slugs and snails. Wrap around legs of worm bin, trees, planters, patio furniture, pet dishes, etc. Slugs and snails do an about-face when they come up to the copper.
Anyone try this to keep wandering worms from crawling out?
